last night’s storm was shattering. windows rattled and rain poured through my open window onto the floor below. i love the sound of water drops tap tapping, and it was too balmy to close the window even if i had wanted to. i welcome thunder and lightning like i welcome black skies full of shining stars. both fill me with perspective, and neither are frequent occurrences in london town.
something about this particular storm seemed… ominous, merited in mythology, created by a power too great for our imagination and conducted by gods warning us of hard times ahead.

today is the referendum, and i have no vote. that’s not surprising as i have no uk-issued visa besides a residence permit, certainly not citizenship although that’s my distant dream.
but for the europeans who have lived here for ages and raised their families on english soil? also no vote. what a crazy world we live in, with it’s borders {moreso in our minds than on actual sea or soil} and fixed notions of “you” versus “me,” and fear.
my vote, if i could make it, would be simply based.
the european union is an institution of peace and stability, a multi-cultural cooperation and the closest thing our planet has achieved to any resemblance of “world peace.”
words that come to mind are:
for now i will bite my nails and look up into the pouring rain and not down at the weary ground. hoping for resolution throughout the night, and good news in the morning.
